Men's Hoops Comes Up Short In Upset Bid

Keith Garner went for 12 points and nine rebounds on Thursday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State gave first place Cal State Dominguez Hills all they could handle on Thursday night before the Toros pulled away for a 70-60 win at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  The victory clinches at least a share of the CCAA regular season title for the Toros as they go to 21-5, 15-4 CCAA.  The Seawolves fall to 11-15, 7-12 CCAA.

In other CCAA action, Cal State L.A. knocked off Humboldt State on Thursday night, setting up a winner-takes-all showdown between the Seawolves and Golden Eagles for the eighth and final CCAA Tournament spot on Friday.

For the Toros, Thursday's win secures their first CCAA Championship since the 1986-87 season.

The Toros looked every bit the conference champ in the first five minutes as they jumped out to a 13-2 lead.  Their lead would swell to 15 at 28-13 before the Seawolves slowly began chipping away, drawing to within seven at the break (35-28).

The Toro lead stayed between six and eleven points throughout most of the second half before the Seawolves began a run in the final seven minutes.  Sonoma got as close as two points down (59-57) with 3:28 to go before the Toros quickly surged ahead again on a pair of three-pointers by James Cawthorne and Jonathan Toliver and an emphatic slam dunk Jerrell Smith.

Keith Garner and Ben Washington each had 12 points to lead the Seawolves in scoring.  Garner pitched in with nine rebounds and Washington tallied four assists.  Sonoma also got 11 points from Steven Pratt.

The Toros got solid contributions from James Cawthorne (17 points), Jonathan Toliver (12 points), and Ryan Walton (11 points).  As a team, the Toros would shot 52.9% from the field.

The Seawolves host Cal State L.A. on Friday night at Seawolf Gym.  Seniors Gerred Link, Curtis Harrison, Duane Wright, and Keith Garner will be honored in a pre-game ceremony in recognition of their final home game.
