ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State (7-10, 5-7 CCAA) was able to come away from their first CCAA series this year with a split, sweeping Chico State (5-10, 3-6 CCAA) this Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond by scores of 3-1, and 9-1.
In the first game of the day, Chico State took the early lead in the top of the first. With two outs, Charlotte Honciano doubled to right field and Jenna Wermes drew a walk. Gwen Cox then came up and reached base on an infield single to first, and during the play, Sonoma's
Janelle Arnold bobbled the ball, allowing Honciano to score from second.
This was all Chico could muster however, as
Brittany Williams scattered four hits and two walks over the next five innings to earn her second victory of the year.
The Seawolves would go five innings with no runs, before rallying back in the bottom of the sixth for three.
Brittany Martinez singled to center, and
Nicole Cordova doubled to right field to drive in pinch runner
Ashley Sardina to even the game at 1-1.
Ashley Britton then reached on an error, sending pinch runner
Nikki Jaime to third.
Ashley Eisemann drove in the go ahead run into left field to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
In Game two, Sonoma State's bats came alive, as the Seawolves collected nine runs on nine hits to secure the split in the series.
Sonoma scored four runs in the first on three hits. With the bases loaded,
Brittany Martinez singled to left field, scoring
Simone Brandalise.
Nicole Cordova hit into a fielder's choice that drove in
Kayla Ledford, giving Sonoma a 2-0 advantage.
Ashley Britton broke the game open with a single to right platting two more Seawovles.
Sonoma would tack on three more in the fourth, and secure the slaughter rule victory in the bottom of the sixth, when Brandalise drove in two more again with a single to right. Brandalise finished the game with two hits, two runs, and three RBI's.
Brittany Reynolds and
Lindsay Emmel held the Wildcats at bay, both allowing only one hit and one run to score.
Next up for the Seawolves is a date with Cal State East Bay on Mar. 3. The doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
