SEASIDE, Calif- A
Marie Sweet second chance basket in the final seconds proved to be the difference on Saturday night as Sonoma State topped Cal State Monterey Bay 52-51 at the Kelp Bed in Seaside. The win lifts the Seawolves to 9-12, 5-9 CCAA while the Otters tumble to 9-11, 4-10 CCAA.
The Seawolves held a 26-23 advantage at the intermission after a tight first half that featured eight lead changes and four ties.
Leading 50-48, the Seawolves fell behind with 38 seconds left when the Otters' Helen Suarez sank a three-pointer from the top of the key. Now down one, Sonoma State advanced the ball before
Olivia Larkin put up a shot with about eight seconds left. Her shot was no good, but the rebound bounced right to Sweet, who laid it up and in to put the Seawolves back on top, 52-51.
The Otters had a chance for the win, but a taut Sonoma defense held CSUMB without a shot attempt on their final trip down the floor.
Lauren Redfield led the Seawolves with 14 points in the game.
Aly Conway and
Stephanie Barnes each added eight points in supporting roles.
Heidi Mertle was tops on the team with eight rebounds.
Dana Andrews paced the Otters with 12 points, who actually out shot the Seawolves 39% to 38%.
Sonoma State returns home next weekend to take on Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
