Softball Opens Tourney With Win Over 'Lopes

Ashley Britton slid home with the winning run on Friday morning
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Ashley Britton scampered home with the winning run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to give Sonoma State an 8-7 win over Grand Canyon in the first game of the Seawolf Invitational on Friday morning in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves improve to 9-12 while the Antelopes drop to 20-9.

Prior to scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, the Seawolves had just seen the Antelopes erase a 7-2 deficit with a five-run top of the frame.

Grand Canyon found the scoreboard first when, in a bizarre turn of events, a slow roller to the pitcher turned into a two-run play.  Kara Holtorf dribbled the ball out to Sonoma pitcher Brittany Reynolds, but her throw was errant and rolled all the way to the corner, allowing Gayle Nesbit, the runner at first, and Holtorf to score.

The Seawolves rallied back with three runs in the fourth thanks to three hits and two Grand Canyon errors.  Britton had an RBI single in the frame.  The lead was pushed to 7-2 in the sixth when Sonoma crossed the plate four times.  Kayla Ledford and Simone Brandalise each had two-run doubles to spark the rally.

In the seventh, the walls nearly caved in on the Seawolves as the Antelopes' first five batters reached, either by walk or single.  The 'Lopes would push five runs across on four hits and three walks to knot the game at seven.

In the bottom of the seventh, Britton led off with a single to center field.  After advancing to third by way of back-to-back groundouts, she was able to come home when a poor pitch by Sam Tiefenthauler go to the backstop.

Britton and Ledford each had three hits to lead a 13-hit attack by the Seawolves, their highest output of the season.  Lindsay Emmel got the win in relief Brittany Reynolds, who struck out seven in six innings of work.

The Seawolves will take on Cal State Monterey Bay in the 11:00 game.
