LOS ANGELES, Calif- The Sonoma State water polo team wrapped up play at the Loyola Marymount Invitational with another split, dropping their first match to host Loyola 11-7, and dominating Colorado State 13-7. With the split, the Seawolves now stand at 6-9 overall.
In game one, host Loyola Marymount scored five of the first six goals to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Lions were powered by senior Nicole Hughes, who entered Sunday's matchup needing only five goals to set the school's all-time career record. Hughes got that and some, netting seven goals to lead all scorers.
Hughes posted three in the first, and added four in the second half. Pacing Sonoma State was Sarah watt with two goals.
Sonoma fared better in match two, outscoring Colorado State 9-1 in the second half to post their second victory of the tournament. The Seawolves got a game-high five goals by
Laurel Stricklin, and
Lauren Smith chipped in three of her own.
The Rams took a 6-3 lead late in the second quarter on a Orsi Nadasdy goal with 1:27 remaining. Sonoma would respond ferociously, scoring the next ten goals in a row en route to a 13-7 victory.
The scoring barrage started with a Stricklin goal in the second quarter to make it 6-4 Colorado State, and ended when
Kyleigh Shea netted her only goal of the game, making it 13-6 Sonoma State.
Water Polo will return to action Mar. 22, when they host Harvard. First sprint is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in Rohnert Park.
