Seawolves Slip By Gators In Extra Innings, 5-4

Joe Slater had three hits in Friday's win over the Gators
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Brian Wright scampered home with the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Max Kirk in the 11th inning as Sonoma State edged San Francisco State 5-4 on Friday afternoon in the first game of a four-game set.  The Seawolves improve to 16-6, 9-6 CCAA with the win while the Gators drop to 6-17, 2-15 CCAA.

The Seawolves captured the game's first lead in the second inning when Joe Slater lined a two-run double to left center field.  Slater, who had three doubles and went 4-for-4 in Sunday's win over CSU Monterey Bay, finished Friday's game 3-for-4 with two doubles.  For the season, Slater is batting .722 (13-for-18) with seven doubles.

The lead was pushed to 4-0 in the seventh when Mark Pestorich plated two with a single to right center.  With Cameron Ray cruising through seven, it looked like a victory was well in hand, but the Gators refused to go away quietly.

After managing just one hit against Ray through seven, the Gator bats came alive in the eighth when Keith Garcia knocked a two-run homer to left.  Two more runs came across in the ninth, on a sac fly by Matt Memeo and an RBI single by Patrick Haugen.

In the 11th, the Seawolves' leadoff hitter, Kyle Jones, reached on a single to lead the inning off.  A pinch-runner, Brian Wright, then moved to second on a groundout, stole third and finally scored on a fly ball to medium center field by Kirk.

Taylor Lewis got the win, allowing just one hit in a sparkling two-inning relief performance.  He improves to 4-0 on the season.  Ryan DeJesus was tagged with the loss.

The Seawolves and Gators will get together for a doubleheader tomorrow in San Francisco.  The series finale will be played on Sunday at 11:00 am at Seawolf Diamond.  The game will be carried on the Seawolf Sports Network.
