ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State water polo team exacted revenge Thursday afternoon at the Dr. G Edward Rudloff Pool against No. 20 Santa Clara, avenging an early season loss with a dominant 12-4 win over the Broncos. It is the first victory for Sonoma in program history over Santa Clara, which had won 18 consecutive matches prior to today's meeting. The Seawolves improve to 7-10 overall, 6-3 in WWPA play, while the Broncos fall to an even 11-11 overall, 5-2 in conference.
After Santa Clara quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 5:04 remaining, the Seawolves closed out the quarter scoring the next four goals. The flurry started with
Lauren Smith netting her only goal of the game, and ended on a
Holly Armijo goal with :39 left giving Sonoma a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Sonoma would score eight of the next ten goals spanning the last three quarters, including seven in the second half.
Laurel Stricklin tacked on two scores in the third and one in the fourth to lead the Seawolves with three goals in the game.
Goalie
Lysa Lombard was outstanding, thwarting the Bronco attack all game. The senior keeper posted a game-high 15 saves, and the four goals allowed was her lowest total of the season.
Sonoma will look to extend their winning ways this weekend when they travel to the Midwest to play Michigan, Maryland and Indiana.
