ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Kyle Jones had four hits on Saturday, including two home runs, as Sonoma State swept Cal State San Bernardino 7-4 and 4-1 at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves have now taken the first three games of the series and will go for the sweep tomorrow. Ranked 18th in the nation, the Seawolves are now 29-11, 21-10 CCAA. The Coyotes fall to 18-19, 12-14 CCAA.
In game one, both teams took advantage of the solo home run in the early going with Julio Torres and Jesus Beltran connecting for the Coyotes and
Kyle Jones and
Ryan Averkieff delivering for the Seawolves. Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, the Seawolves pulled ahead on a pair of RBIs from
Leo Avila and
Cameron Cook.
San Bernardino would tie things up in the seventh on a run-scoring ground out from Darren Dworak before the Seawolves put things away in the bottom of the inning when Jones hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to right field. It was Jones' fourth homer in the last three games.
Taylor Lewis tossed 2.1 fine innings of relief, coming out with his sixth win of the season. Bryan Hart was given the loss after allowing three runs in three innings of work. Jones would finish 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Sonoma.
Ian Bridges also had a good game with three hits. No Coyotes had more than a single hit.
In game two, the teams were locked in a pitching duel with
Morgan Rodriguez of Sonoma and Andrew Schile of San Bernardino doing a nice job of working out of jams. That changed in the sixth when Sonoma took advantage of three walks to score a trio of runs. Two of the runs came in on an Averkieff single to right.
Rodriguez got the win for Sonoma State, tossing six innings and striking out four to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Brian Flint tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his team-high sixth save of the season. Schile got the loss for CSUSB. Jones had two hits for Sonoma while the Coyotes scattered six hits over six different batters.
The teams will face off again on Sunday in the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 11:00 am.
