ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Fresh off wins last week over a pair of ranked teams in Maryland and Santa Clara, the Sonoma State women's water polo team made its first-ever appearance in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Varsity Water Polo rankings. The poll is made up of all water polo squads from across the country, regardless of the school's primary athletic division.
Water polo is unique in that there are not divisional breakdowns as there are for almost all NCAA sports. Therefore, the Seawolves compete for the same national championship as schools like Stanford, USC, and UCLA. That they are included among the top 25 in the nation, is a testament to the quality of water polo at Sonoma State. In fact, they are one of just three schools on the chart that do not compete at the division I level for their other sports.
The Seawolves are 8-12 on the year with nine of their losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents.
This weekend, the Seawolves take on No. 18 UC San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino, No. 10 Loyola Marymount, and No. 16 Cal State Bakersfield at the Santa Clara Invitational.
