STOCKTON, Calif- The Sonoma State softball team captured their first ever CCAA Conference Tournament victory Thursday afternoon at Arnaiz Field, upsetting No. 1 seed Humboldt State, 6-2. The Seawolves move to 3-3 against the defending national champion Lumberjacks on the season, and will play Cal State Monterey Bay, a 7-3 winner over UC San Diego, on Friday.
After falling behind early in the game 2-0, Sonoma State stormed back in the final three innings, scoring two runs in each of the final three frames and posting seven of their nine hits in the final three innings.
The Seawolves commenced their rally on a
Jessica Abelia single to left field that plated
Ashley Britton, Abelia advanced to second on the play when
Danielle Lowe was tagged out at home on a rocket from Lumberjacket left fielder Lindsay Warren. The Seawolves shortstop then moved to third on a wild pitch and was subsequently driven in on a RBI single from
Kayla Ledford.
Sonoma tacked on two more runs in the next inning, as designated player
Brittany Martinez doubled to left field scoring
Simone Brandalise. Sonoma State increased their lead to 4-2 when CCAA Pitcher of the Year
Lindsay Emmel helped her own cause with an RBI single to center field.
A Brandalise two-run home run to dead center field in the top of the seventh capped of the Seawolves' comeback.
Emmel settled down after allowing two runs in the first two innings, scattering four hits, striking out two, and surrendering three walks to close out the game to improve her record to 17-9 on the year.
