SANTA CLARA, Calif- The Sonoma State water polo team concluded play at the Bronco Invitational Sunday afternoon, dropping both of their matches to Loyola Marymount 11-6, and Cal State San Bernardino 8-7. The two losses drop Sonoma's record to 9-16 overall.
In match one, the Lions lead from wire to wire, jumping out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter. Anne Scott notched two of her four goals in the first, and Mary Campos and Nicole Hughes each chipped in with a goal.
Loyola Marymount extended their lead to 6-2 in the second quarter on a Scott goal with 3:01 remaining in the half. The Lions would close out the rest of the game on a 5-4 to run to ensure victory.
The Seawolves prolific scoring duo of Samantha Mullins and Laurel Stricklin were kept quiet by the Loyola defense, with both managing only one goal each.
Sonoma seemed prime for another split in their nightcap, bolting out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter against Cal State Bakersfield. Emily Pearce secured the Seawolves third goal of the quarter with :27 remaining.
The Roadrunners were not deterred however, as they exploded for six goals in the second. The scoring flurry commenced when Amanda Ortiz found the net early in the period, and ended with :34 left in the half as Shannon McKenzie netted her second goal of the period to give Cal State Bakersfield a 6-3 advantage.
Sonoma State inched their way back into the game in the second half, as they tied the score at 7-7 in the fourth quarter when Laurel Stricklin connected on her second goal of the game. The Roadrunners would answer again, this time with 1:12 remaining in regulation to clinch victory 8-7.
The Seawolves will return to the pool Apr. 10 when they host UC Santa Cruz. First sprint is set for 3:00 p.m.
