Softball Eliminated From CCAA Tournament

Kayla Ledford and the Seawolves were eliminated from the CCAA tournament
STOCKTON, Calif- The Sonoma State softball team and their CCAA Tournament came to an end on a wet Friday afternoon at Arnaiz Field, as the Seawolves fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-0, and were eliminated by UC San Diego in their second game, 3-2. Sonoma will wait for the NCAA West Regional Rankings to be released on Sunday to find out what seed they will receive. Sonoma State entered the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed in the West Region.

In game one, Sonoma's bats could not muster much offense, as the Seawolves were held to just two hits. The Otters' Shelair Rowell was on top of her game, as the junior went six innings, striking out six and walking only two batters.

The only runs scored came in the bottom of the fifth, when Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for five runs against freshman Brittany Reynolds. The big blow was delivered by Rowell, who lazered a grand slam over the right center fence to lift the Otter advantage to 5-0.

Cal State Monterey Bay would increase their lead against the Seawolves in the sixth, posting three runs for the slaughter rule victory. With two outs, Ashlee Trotter cleared the bases on a double down the left field line, sending the Otters into the Championship game.

In the elimination game, the Seawolves had their fair chances in the game, but could not capitalize with runners in scoring position. After UC San Diego scored in the top of the first, Sonoma evened the score in their home half, but also had two runners thrown out in the inning at home plate. Janelle Arnold was thrown at home by shortstop Amanda Eliades, and Danielle Lowe was caught stealing while trying to snag home plate.

The Tritons increased their lead to 3-1 in the top of third, when center fielder Allison May belted a two-run homer to left field.

Emmel, who started her second game of the tournament, picked up her tenth loss of the season after going five innings and allowing three earned runs.

The Seawolves decreased the Triton margin to 3-2, as Ashley Britton safety squeezed in Ashley Sardina in the bottom of the fourth. That would be all the runs Sonoma would produce, as Camille Gaito picked up her eleventh win of the year.
