PALM SPRINGS, Calif- Behind a tremendous outing from senior
Gary Moran, Sonoma State opened up the CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday night with a 4-0 win over Cal State L.A. at Palm Springs Stadium in balmy Palm Springs. The Seawolves improve to 31-12 on the season and will now take on No. 1 seed UC San Diego on Friday at 3:00 pm.
The recently anointed CCAA Pitcher of the Year allowed just three hits and one walk in eight innings while striking out nine. In fact, CSULA would not get a hit until the fourth inning. For the season, Moran is now 4-1 with a 1.26 ERA.
Though they have struggled at the plate over the past couple of games, the Seawolves were able to break out and get Moran all the runs he'd need in the first inning, when
Kyle Jones blasted a home run to right center field. It was the seventh homer of the season for Jones and it would be the game's only scoring until and RBI single by
Nick Ramos and an RBI double by
Ian Bridges in the eighth.
Bridges was 2-for-4 in the game to lead the Seawolves' five-hit attack.
The Seawolves will take on UC San Diego tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm. Win and they go straight to Saturday; lose and they will play a second game tomorrow, at 7:00 pm. UC San Diego was a 2-1 winner over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
