Seawolves Fall Just Short In CCAA Title Game

Mark Pestorich delivered the go-ahead run in the ninth
PALM SPRINGS, Calif-  A furious ninth-inning rally that saw them take the lead was just not enough on Saturday as Sonoma State fell in the CCAA Championship game to UC San Diego 8-7 at Palm Springs Stadium.  The Seawolves fall to 32-14 on the season and will now await seeding for the NCAA West Regional, to be played next weekend.

It was the second CCAA championship for the Tritons and they will most likely enter the regional as the top seed.

The Seawolves got a gusty effort from sophomore Kendall Davis, who threw eight innings and struck out five.  Leading 7-6 heading into the ninth, Taylor Lewis was roughed up for the loss when the Tritons' Kellen Lee homered to tie it up.  UCSD proceeded to hit three straight singles to earn the walk-off win.

The game was made exciting because of a thrilling ninth-inning rally that saw the Seawolves take dismantle a three-run UCSD lead.  Following three straight singles to open up the inning, Ian Bridges hit a two-run single to right to plate Brian Wright and Joe Slater.  After a Danny Pignataro sac fly tied the score, Mark Pestorich gave the Seawolves the lead with a single to center field that scored Bridges.

As a team, the Seawolves had 15 hits, led by three each from Slater and Ryan Stevens

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Kyle Jones, Ryan Stevens, and Gary Moran were named to the CCAA All-Tournament team for their performances over the weekend.
