Volleyball Cruises In Regular Season Opener, 3-0

Lindsay Brown had 27 assists to lead the Seawolves.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- True freshman Allyson Sather and sophomore transfer Keala Peterson combined for 21 kills in their Seawolves debut, helping Sonoma State sweep Notre Dame de Namur, 3-0, in the Seawolf Spike on Friday afternoon. The match was the regular season opener for both teams.

The Seawolves got off to a blazing start in set one, hitting at a .464 clip on 15 kills and just two errors in 28 attacks, winning the set 25-12. Senior Lindsay Brown spread out the Sonoma State offense, assisting on 10 of the 15 kills in the first set, as five Seawolves posted at least two kills.

Notre Dame de Namur (0-1) stepped up the offensive pressure in set two, forcing nine ties and five lead changes. The Argonauts got help from Breanna Morales and Caitlin Torres as the two have five hammers apiece, but the Sonoma State defense held up strong and took set two, 25-21.

Despite seven ties and three lead changes in the third and final set, the Seawolves pulled away to take the 25-18 set victory and the eventual sweep for their first win of the 2009 season.

Sather led the hot hitting squad with 11 kills as Peterson added 10. Brown added to her all-time assists total, raking in 27 for the match. Libero Taylor Krenwinkel had a team-high 11 digs.

The Argonauts were led by Morales, who hammered in 10 kills as Joanna Gresh had team highs in assists (27) and digs (12).

Sonoma State (1-0) will take a couple hours off before returning to the court this evening at 7 p.m. to take on Western Oregon.
