Men's Soccer Edges Stanislaus In CCAA Opener

Trevor Hurst had a goal and an assist in Friday's victory.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sophomore Trevor Hurst had a goal and an assist, but it would be freshman Erick Delgado supplying the game-winner on Friday afternoon as Sonoma State opened up defense of their 2008 conference championship with a 3-2 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA opener for both teams.  The 11th-ranked Seawolves remain undefeated at 4-0-1 on the year while the Warriors (3-1-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) taste defeat for the first time under new head coach Dana Taylor.

In an entertaining, up-and-down contest with numerous goal scoring opportunities for both sides, it would be the Warriors breaking through first when, in the ninth minute, Victor Regalado received a ricochet off a blocked shot attempt and then blasted it home to put Stanislaus up 1-0.

The Seawolves would draw even in the 21st when Hurst scored off a corner kick from Cam Vickers.  The Seawolves would not have to wait even three minutes later before they gained their first lead of the game when freshman Jomed Tejan gathered a ball that, off a kick by Hurst, bounced behind Stanislaus keeper Javier Rosales.  He quickly slotted it home to put Sonoma up, 2-1.

Right before halftime, the Warriors brought the game even once again when Jose Velasquez scored off an assist by Bladmir Murillo.  The goal was in part the result of a miscommunication by the Sonoma defense in front of the net.

Early in the second half, the Seawolves picked up the final score of the game when the shifty Delgado netted his first collegiate goal.  After Stuart Gallant took a free kick, Ben Langwith was able to head the ball across the mouth of the goal to the far post, where Delgado booted it in.

"I thought we played very well in the second half, especially with the heat," said Ziemer.  "They (Stanislaus) are a little more used to it than we are, being from the Central Valley, but our guys showed the ability to bounce back in the second and we earned what I call a "professional" win by being efficient and not wasting energy."

Despite five goals being scored, the game did feature several very nice saves by the goalkeepers- Brook Johnson for Sonoma and Rosales and Steven Waite for Stanislaus.

The Seawolves held a 22-12 shot advantage which was definitely more evident in the second half, when they out shot Stanislaus 12-5.  The fouls were even at 17, but Sonoma was carded four times to just one for Stanislaus.

The Seawolves will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday when they host rival Chico State in another conference tilt.

"This was a good win for us," remarked Ziemer, "Stanislaus is much improved...they're very organized.  Hats off to their new head coach, but now we turn our focus to Chico on Sunday."

Box Score:  No. 11 Sonoma State 3, Cal State Stanislaus 2
