Brown Notches 3,000th Career Assist, Seawolves Win

Lindsay Brown made history Saturday night for the Seawolves.

SEASIDE, Calif- Senior setter Lindsay Brown notched her 3,000th career assist and freshman Ally Sather had 23 kills to lead all players, helping the No. 13 Sonoma State Seawolves to a four-set victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night at the Otter Sports Center.

The Seawolves, ranked 13th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, returned to the win column -- a night after they saw their 11-match win streak snapped at San Francisco State -- to improve to 12-1 overall in 4-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition. The Otters, meanwhile, stumbled to 1-4 in the CCAA and 5-7 overall.

Sather raked in six kills in just seven attacks with no errors to lead the Seawolves to a first set victory, 25-23. Junior Marianne Fox added five kills early on to help Sonoma State hit at a fiery .316 clip (17 kills, five errors, 38 attacks).

It was in the second set that Brown made history, handing out her 3,000th career assist after setting freshman Devynne Johnson to one of her career-high seven kills in the match. Brown ended the night with a game-high 46 assists, moving her all-time school record total to 3,021, doing so in 333 just career sets (9.07 assists/set). Despite the feat, Sonoma State was unable to take the win in set two after Monterey Bay used several big runs to come out on top, 25-18, and even the match at one set apiece.

The third set was a much different story as the Seawolves went on a blazing 12-0 run, including four service aces by Brown, to take the easy 25-19 win and take the 2-1 match lead.

Sonoma State led from start to finish in the fourth set even though Monterey Bay kept the score close. It was the Seawolves, though, that scored the last five points to take the fourth set, 25-17, and the convincing match victory.

Sather was lights out on Saturday, hammering in the aforementioned 23 kills with just three errors in 50 attacks for a .400 hitting percentage – she was the only Sonoma State player with double-digits. Senior Sarah Illingworth had seven kills in the victory as well. Sophomore Taylor Krenwinkel again anchored the Seawolves defense with 28 kills.

The Otters got 13 kills by Rheann Fall and 10 by Elizabeth Hanna and Kerri Sudarsana for a team that only hit at a .156 clip.

Sonoma State will wrap up its four-game road trip next weekend, taking on Cal Poly Pomona (Thursday) and nationally ranked Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday).
