Cunningham Scores Early, Seawolves Roll To Victory

Megan Cunningham set the tone early for the Seawolves.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomore Megan Cunningham scored just 61 seconds into the match and the Seawolves added a pair of insurance goals late in the second half to cruise to a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field.

Cunningham wasted no time to get Sonoma State on the scoreboard, making a move just above the 18-yard line and poking a shot up and over Notre Dame de Namur goalkeeper Kelsey Baxter for the 1-0 lead at 1:01.

"We created a lot of opportunities for us today," head coach Luke Oberkirch said. "Megan scored an absolute beautiful goal in the first (61 seconds)."

The Seawolves (2-0-0) controlled the remainder of the first half, outshooting the Argonauts 9-1 before the halftime break. In the second half, Notre Dame de Namur put the pressure on the Seawolf backfield, firing nine shots in the final 45 minutes. However, senior Tracy Webster took a 1v1 opportunity against Baxter and converted in the 72nd minute to put Sonoma State up 2-0.

In the 80th minute, freshman Macy Usher headed a cross ball from sophomore Marissa Shaw into the net for her third goal in two games -- all of them headers.

A corner kick by Notre Dame de Namur's Kimberly Wilhite in the 89th minute found Sally Olsson at the far post who headed the ball up and over Seawolves netminder Courtney Grixti for the eventual final score at 3-1.

"We made a couple of errors, especially right there at the end but overall, it was a good game," Oberkirch added.

Shaw led all players with six shots in the match (three on goal) and senior Lindsay Catton added four. Grixti made four saves between the posts for Sonoma State.

Linzey Harvey came off the bench for Notre Dame de Namur (0-2-0) to fire a team-high three shots in the losing effort. Baxter made four saves for the Argonauts as well.

Sonoma State will hit the road for a brief two-game road trip in the Pacific Northwest to take on Saint Martin's and Western Washington before returning home to host Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.
