No. 24 Volleyball Makes Quick Work Of Geoducks

Taylor Krenwinkel (center) paced the Seawolves with 11 digs on Friday.
ELLENSBURG, Wash-  The Sonoma State volleyball team extended their impressive season-opening winning streak to seven straight on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Evergreen State at the CWU Invitational in Ellensburg.  The Seawolves are 7-0 heading in to their final non-conference match of the year, tonight against No. 21 Western Washington.

The Seawolves, ranked 24th in this week's AVCA National Rankings, needed just 51 minutes to defeat the Geoducks by scores of 25-9, 25-6, and 25-13.

After a quick first set, Coach Grassl took advantage of an opportunity to rest some of his starters- Ally Sather, Rikki Buckshnis, and Keala Peterson.  In their place, several reserves stepped up and made their own statements.

Kendahl Batiste had eight kills and no errors in 14 attempts (.571) and Briana Hammonds had six kills to pace the hitters.

As a team, the Seawolves hit a blistering .409, their highest percentage of the season.  The Geoducks hit -.138, thanks in part to the excellent net play of the Seawolves.  Sarah Illingworth had eight blocks to lead the Seawolves' 12-block performance.

Lindsay Brown had 22 assists and Taylor Krenwinkel went for 11 digs to lead Sonoma in those categories.

Jazzmin Garcia paced the Geoducks with six kills.

Box Score:  Sonoma State 3, Evergreen State 0

What is a Geoduck?  We were hoping you would ask.  A geoduck is not a duck at all, but a species of saltwater clam.  We hope you find the following link as informative as we did:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoduck
