Will Olsem showed off his hot hand from beyond the three-point arc for the second straight game, hitting six treys en route to a game-high 26 points, and three other Sonoma State players scored in double-figures to lead the Seawolves in an impressive 77-58 victory over Chico State on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma State rose to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in CCAA play. The Wildcats lost their second straight in falling to 9-4 and 5-3.
The win gives the Seawolves 13 consecutive victories against Chico State at home while snapping a season-long six-game skid. Sonoma State improves to 16-2 against Chico State, dating back to the 2001 season.
Sonoma State utilized a very balanced attack on Saturday, jumping out to a big lead from the opening tip. Senior
Chad Chambers had a huge game, grabbing 12 rebounds and adding 10 assists to record his second double-double of the season. Sophomore
Steven Pratt ran the offense with poise, netting 15 points, handing out a career-high eight assists and bringing down seven board while freshman
Patrick Scott dropped in 14 points.
The Seawolves were hot from the floor, making 58.5 percent of their shots (24 of 41) including eight three-pointers. Sonoma State held Chico State to just 35.2 percent from the floor (19 of 54).
Thanks to several big runs in the opening period, Sonoma State jumped out to a big 20-10 lead, then stretched it to a 19 point advantage at 37-18 just before halftime. The Seawolves maintained their composure throughout the second half, helping SSU to grab its largest lead of the game (26) at 49-23 with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
Chico State then got the Seawolf lead down to 13 at 67-54 with just over five minutes left but it would be as close as they would get.
The Wildcats were led by the 14 points of Brian Seals and 11 of Terence Pellum.
Sonoma State will return to the floor on Thursday when the Seawolves host Cal State East Bay. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Wolves Den.
