Steven Pratt nailed a jumper with 2:11 remaining in the contest to close the San Francisco State lead to just six points at 56-50, but the Gators went on a 9-2 run to close out the ballgame, handing Sonoma State a 65-52 loss on Saturday night in San Francisco. The loss sends the Seawolves to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA. The Gators notched their tenth win this season, moving to 10-2 and 3-1 in conference play.
Sonoma State held a 12-11 advantage with 9:44 remaining in the opening half but San Francisco State reeled off a 11-0 run over the next three minutes to pull away with a ten point lead. The Seawolves would then get back to within five points at 24-19 after two free throws by senior
Kyle Shandera but a Gator free throw with 15 seconds left in the half gave SFSU the 25-19 lead at halftime.
Sonoma State made only five shots in the first half (5-of-18 shooting from the floor) while the Gators hit on 34.6 percent (9-26).
San Francisco State would stretch its lead to 15 on three different occasions, including a 47-32 lead with 9:25 remaining in the game. The Seawolves would claw back into the contest, going on an 8-0 run to close the gap to six points with 2:11 remaining. However, it would be as close as they would get.
Pratt led the Seawolves with 15 points and seven rebounds, scoring nine of his 15 in the final half. Freshman
Chris Weber and Shandera added seven points each for Sonoma State.
Marquel Hoskins led all scorers with 19 points in the game on 6-of-12 shooting and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Hoskins also had a game-high nine rebounds. The Gators forced 19 turnovers while only losing the ball six times as a team.
Sonoma State will return to the court on Sunday when the Seawolves travel to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:30 p.m. at the Otter Sports Center.
