Women's Basketball Falls To No. 7 UC San Diego

Jennifer Russo led the Seawolves with ten points on Saturday night.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Conference front runner UC San Diego used a 12-0 run early in the second half to pull away from Sonoma State on Saturday en route to 68-52 CCAA women's basketball win at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  With the win, the seventh-ranked Tritons bounce back from their first defeat of the season, improving to 15-1, 9-1 CCAA.  The Seawolves see an end to their three-game winning streak, sliding to 8-9, 6-6 CCAA.

Though they would trail for most of the first half, the Seawolves hung tough with the Tritons, finishing the period on a 7-0 run, capped by a Jennifer Russo buzzer beater from near half court.  That made the score 34-31 at the break and when Stephanie Barnes hit a three to start off the second, the Seawolves were able to draw even.

From that point, the Tritons went on a 12-0 run over a four-minute stretch to make the score 49-37.  Russo would hit another three to pull Sonoma within nine, but a Leilani Martin layup a couple moments pushed the lead back to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the game.

Russo would finish the game with a team-high ten points to lead Sonoma State.  Nadia Williams emerged from the bench to post nine points and Christy Shreve and Stephanie Barnes each pumped in seven.

UC San Diego to 21 points from Chelsea Carlisle and ten each from Erin Noonan and Tiffany Hunter.  Annette Ilg would near a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

The Seawolves will hit the road next week to face Cal State L.A. (Friday) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Saturday).
