Men's Basketball Loses To No. 22 Broncos On Friday

POMONA, Calif- Junior Mike Nelson and freshman Will Olsem scored in double-figures for Sonoma State on Friday, but 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona shot 56.8 percent from the floor on 22-of-54 shooting to defeat the Seawolves, 74-60, in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action at Kellogg Gymnasium. Sonoma State falls to 3-9 overall (2-5 CCAA) while Cal Poly Pomona rises to 6-2 (4-1 CCAA).

The Seawolves started off strong, hitting three of their first four shots, including two three pointers to give Sonoma State an 8-5 lead three minutes into the contest. The Broncos, ranked 22nd in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) national poll, then went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. A three-pointer by Olsem ended the streak of eight straight Cal Poly Pomona points but it would be as close as Sonoma State would get all night.

The Broncos extended their lead to ten (29-19) with five minutes remaining in the opening half but consecutive points by the Seawolves closed the gap to seven. CPP then answered right back to end the half on a 6-0 run to take the 33-22 into halftime.

Cal Poly Pomona kept at least a ten point lead throughout most of the second half, pulling ahead by as much as 18 on several occasions. However, Sonoma State would not go away. The Seawolves narrowed the Bronco lead to just eight points, at 68-60, with 56 seconds left in regulation. Another 6-0 run ended any hope of an upset by the Seawolves, as the Broncos took the 74-60 victory.

Olsem led Sonoma State with 13 points, including a team-high five rebounds and Nelson added 10.

Donnelle Booker (17), Dwayne Fells (16) and Tobias Jahn (11) all scored in double-figures for Cal Poly Pomona.

Sonoma State will return to action on Saturday night at Cal State San Bernardino (7:30 p.m.) before returning home to host Cal State Stanislaus, kicking off a four-game homestand next Thursday at The Wolves' Den.
