Box Score: Sonoma State 68, Cal State East Bay 62
HAYWARD, Calif- Down by 15 points with under three minutes remaining in regulation, Cal State East Bay staged an 11-0 run in 2:50 to pull to within four at 66-62 with six seconds left, but
Will Olsem converted two free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Sonoma State on Sunday evening, 68-62, at Pioneer Gymnasium at Hayward. The Seawolves go to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play, while the Pioneers fall to 0-4 in conference and 2-6 overall.
The two teams traded the lead in the opening three minutes of the game, but it would be Sonoma State who would take its first lead and hold it for the remainder of the game just 3:25 into the contest. The Seawolves would eventually stretch their lead of 17 points with 5:00 left in the first half.
The Pioneers wouldn't go away quietly, though, as they went on a 13-2 run in four minutes to close the Seawolf lead to just six at 30-24. Two free throws by
Matthew French would put the SSU halftime lead back up to eight points at 32-24.
For the majority of the second half, Sonoma State would enjoy double-digit leads and seemingly put the game out of reach from Cal State East Bay on a jumper by
James Sandoval with 3:29 left in regulation -- the Seawolves led 66-51 at that point. That's when the Pioneers made their 11-0 run, but they couldn't get any closer as the clock just simply ran out.
Ben Washington led the Seawolves with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Sonoma State spread the ball around on offense, though, as six other Seawolves converted three shots, including Olsem, as two of his three came from beyond the arc. He scored 12 points in Sunday's win. French chipped in with eight points and led all players with seven rebounds.
As a team, the Seawolves hit just under 50 percent of their shots (48.9) on 23-of-47 from the floor. SSU had a big night at the free throw line, too, connecting on 19-of-23 attempted. Cal State East Bay hit on 42.6 percent of its shots (23-54), but misfired on 10-of-22 shots from the charity stripe.
The Pioneers' Roshun Wynne led all scorers with 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Wynne also had five assists and five steals.
Sonoma State will take its holiday break before returning to action on Jan. 30 at UC San Diego. Tipoff at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla is set for 7:30 p.m. The Seawolves will then return home to kick off a season-long five-game homestand, beginning with a Jan. 2 tilt with archrival Humboldt State in The Wolves' Den at 3 p.m.
