Seawolves' Upset Bid Falls Short In 76-71 Loss

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Freshman Patrick Scott nailed a three-pointer to put Sonoma State ahead 71-70 with one minute remaining in regulation, but Cal State San Bernardino scored six straight points in the final 52 seconds to push ahead of the upset-minded Seawolves, 76-71, on Thursday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves, who came into the game tied for seventh in the CCAA, fell to 7-10 in conference play and 8-14 overall. The Coyotes improved to 16-5 overall and 14-3 in the CCAA.

Coming into Thursday's ballgame tied atop the conference standings with Humboldt State at 13-3, Cal State San Bernardino never led by more than seven points at any time in the first half. The Seawolves kept things close and even tied the game (23-23) on a Will Olsem three-pointer at the 4:47 mark. Five straight Coyote points pushed the lead back out to a 28-23 advantage. Both teams went back and forth, but Corey Caston converted a jumper with four seconds left in the opening period to give CSUSB the five point lead at halftime, 37-32.

The Coyotes then led by as much as 11 points just four minutes into the second half before the Seawolves came within one (53-52) after a 14-3 run. Steven Pratt then hit a three-pointer at the 7:27 mark to give SSU their first lead of the game.

Both teams then battled through seven ties and six lead changes from then on out, but Cal State San Bernardino showed off why they are ranked third in the NCAA Division II West Region poll and scored the last six points to take the victory.

Olsem led all scorers with 22 points, including 18 from beyond the three point arc -- he has led the team in scoring in seven of the last 11 games. Sterling Arterberry added 13 points off the bench and Pratt added 11.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, with nearly identical numbers. Sonoma State hit 24-of-48 from the floor (10 from three-point range) and Cal State San Bernardino was 26-of-52 shooting, eight of which came from long range.

Five Coyotes scored in double-figures -- Bryan LeDuc and Aaron Hill led the way with 15 points apiece. David Jefferson and LeDuc brought down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Sonoma State will return to the floor on Saturday night to host Cal Poly Pomona in the Seawolves' final home game of the 2009-10 season. Pomona beat Humboldt State at Arcata on Thursday night to move into a tie for second place with the Lumberjacks in the conference standings.

Saturday night will also mark senior night, in which two Sonoma State student-athletes will be playing in their final home basketball game. Chad Chambers and Kyle Shandera will be honored in a pre-game ceremony, scheduled to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
