Offense Explodes In Nightcap, Seawolves Split

Kayla Ledford had a bases-clearing double in the game two victory.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After an extra inning loss in game one to Notre Dame de Namur, 4-1, Sonoma State bounced back in game two, exploding for nine runs in the first inning to cruise to 11-1 victory on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. With the split, the Seawolves move to 4-2 this season, and the Argonauts go to 1-3.

After being no-hit in game one last Wednesday, Notre Dame de Namur made sure it wouldn't happen again. Leadoff hitter Amanda Johnson singled to center field, but could not do anything with it. In the second inning, though, Johnson came up again with a bunt single with the bases loaded to give the Argonauts the 1-0 lead.

The Seawolves came back in the bottom of the third when Jesse Talaugon singled through the right side to score Janelle Arnold and even the score at one apiece.

From then on, it was a pitching duel between Notre Dame de Namur's Sammy McConvey and Kristina Sewell, and Sonoma State's Julianne Martinez. Before being relieved in the sixth, McConvey scattered six hits and allowed just the one Seawolf run in the third. Sewell came on in relief and shut Sonoma State down in her four innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Sonoma State's had several chances to claim victory. With Arnold on third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Sewell forced a popup and a groundout to get out of the inning and send the game into extra innings. Then again in the Seawolves' bottom half of the eighth inning, Sonoma State loaded the bases with one out but two popups to the catcher ended the threat, yet again.

In the top of the ninth inning, Mary Ortega gave the Argonauts the lead with a RBI single to left field, scoring Breanna Morales for the 2-1 score. Then, Cassie Avila padded the lead with a two-RBI triple, giving NDNU a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Martinez went the distance for Sonoma State, scattering nine hits and striking out nine. Seven different Seawolves had at least one hit but 12 were left on base.

Game two was a different story. Sonoma State didn't waste anytime on offense and exploded for nine runs in the first inning, including Ledford's three-RBI double in her second plate appearance of the inning. The Seawolves added a run in the third and fourth innings to cruise to the 11-1 win.

Pitcher Samantha Lipperd, fresh off her no-hitter on Wednesday against the Argonauts in just her second collegiate appearance, went four innings, giving up just two hits. She improved to 3-0 on the season. Ledford came in to retire the side in the fifth inning to secure the win.

Danielle D'Eccliss and Skylynn Myers each had two hits and two RBIs. Rochelle Vanyi also had two RBIs.

Sonoma State will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play when they travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a five-game series, beginning on Friday at 11 a.m.
