Randy Wells and
Ryan Stevens each hit a home run and seven different pitchers combined to scatter just six hits and give up three runs as Sonoma State defeated San Francisco State, 13-3, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Maloney Field in San Francisco. The Seawolves rise to 7-6 overall while the Gators fall to 6-8.
Joey Parigi wasted no time getting on base, leading off and poking a single up the middle on a 2-1 count. After
Steven Filippi reached base on a fielder's choice that forced Parigi out at second base, Jones blasted a shot to right center to give the Seawolves the early 2-0 lead.
San Francisco State got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning when Drew Andersen stole home to narrow the SSU lead to 2-1. Both teams were held scoreless in the second, but in the top of the third, the Seawolves broke out for four runs, including a two run double by
Max Shupe that gave the Seawolves a 6-1 lead.
Five more runs over the next three innings -- an RBI single by
Michael Cole, a two-run home run by Stevens and a RBI single by
Tommy Lyons -- put Sonoma State at a comfortable 11-3 lead going into the final three innings.
Two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a Wells home run and a RBI single by
Jon Richards gave starting pitcher
Mark Lincoln the victory after just two innings of work on the mound. Wells ended the day going 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Parigi, Jones and Lyons each had two hits for Sonoma State.
For the Gators, catcher Keith Garcia had two hits to lead SFSU.
Sonoma State will travel to Seaside to partake in a neutral site game against Montana State Billings next Wednesday (Mar. 3) before returning home to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series starting on Mar. 5.
