No. 2 Tritons Complete Series Sweep Of Seawolves

Max Shupe went 3-for-4 in Sunday's loss to nationally-ranked UC San Diego.
LA JOLLA, Calif- Max Shupe went 3-for-4 with a home run, Randy Wells and Brian Wright got two hits apiece, but UC San Diego, who is ranked second in the nation, went off for 12 runs on 15 hits to defeat Sonoma State 12-3 on Sunday afternoon and complete the four-game series sweep at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. The Seawolves fall to 9-13 overall and just 2-10 in the CCAA. The Tritons, meanwhile, improved to 23-3 and 14-2 in conference play.

After a scoreless two and a half innings, UC San Diego exploded for five runs off of Seawolves starter Keith Thompson, chasing him from the ballgame. Ken Cook came in to stop the bleeding in the third, but allowed another run to cross the plate in the fourth, as the Tritons took a 6-0 lead.

Sonoma State got a run in the sixth when Wells brought home Joey Parigi with a single to left field. In the seventh, the Seawolves closed the gap to 6-2 on a solo shot by Shupe to right field. The Tritons, though, got those two runs back in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 8-2. The flood gates again opened for UC San Diego in the eighth, as they scored four runs to put the game out of reach for the Seawolves.

Austin Hogans supplied the only other run for Sonoma State in the game, blasting a solo shot to right field, but it would be all SSU could muster in the 12-3 loss.

Thompson got the loss as he falls to 0-1. UCSD's Kirby St. John (5-1) earned the win after tossing five and one third inning, scattering four hits and giving up just one run. He walked three and struckout three.

Sonoma State will look to get back into the win column when the Seawolves step out of non-conference play and travel to Nevada to take on the Wolf Pack on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. SSU will then return home next weekend to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series, starting on Friday.
