Seawolves Continue Offensive Showcase In Sweep

Janelle Arnold had a huge day at the plate on Friday afternoon.
HAYWARD, Calif- Ashley Britton had five hits, including three doubles, and Janelle Arnold added four hits and a home run to highlight a huge offensive day by Sonoma State, giving the Seawolves 8-0 and 12-5 victories over host Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Hayward. Sonoma State, who is receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll, improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2 and one game out of first place in the CCAA standings. The Pioneers fall to 4-10.

After a scoreless tie through two innings, Sonoma State woke up its bats and grabbed the first lead on a two RBI double by LeeAnn Stroud that scored Britton and Danielle D'Eccliss.

From then on out, it was the Julianne Martinez show, who gave up no runs despite five hits by the Pioneers, none of which went for extra bases. The only real threat came in the third inning when Cal State East Bay's Sarah Divini reached third base with one out. However, two groundouts ended the inning and preserve the shutout, as Martinez (6-2) retired the last eight Pioneer batters to end the game in the 8-0 mercy rule after five innings. She struckout two in the winning effort.

It was the Seawolf fourth inning, though, that broke things open. Vanessa Currie, Arnold and Britton all doubled in the inning as part of a four run, five hit inning that blew the game wide open. The Seawolves then added two more in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Skylynn Myers, that would give Sonoma State the eventual 8-0 shutout victory.

The Seawolves didn't stop there. Arnold went off in the second game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with the home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Britton also chipped in with three hits in five at bats, scoring three runs and bringing home two runs. Jesse Talaugon and Kayla Ledford added two hits each for the Seawolves, who ended up with 12 runs on 16 hits in the night cap.

Sonoma State scored the first four runs of game two in the first three frames, but Cal State East Bay came back to tie the game up at four after four runs on six hits and a error. The Pioneers even pulled ahead 5-4 after Sara Holdridge homered in the fifth inning.

However, the Seawolves wouldn't back down, scoring five runs in the sixth and three more runs in the seventh inning to cruise to the 12-5 victory.

Samantha Lipperd went the distance for Sonoma State, scattering a season-high 10 hits and giving up the five runs, four of which were earned. She struckout four and walked two.

Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay will wrap up its four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader in Hayward, beginning at Noon.
