SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- A
Rochelle Vanyi home run and
Julianne Martinez shutout were enough in game one, but the Sonoma State softball team needed a five-run outburst in the eighth inning of game two to complete a four-game sweep of rival San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon in the City. The 21st-ranked Seawolves won game one 2-0 before closing out their weekend with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap to improve to 37-12, 23-9 CCAA on the season. The Gators tumble to 19-26, 12-16 CCAA.
The victories clinch the Seawolves a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament, to be played April 30th through May 2nd in Stockton. It will be the team's second consecutive appearance in the event.
In addition, the Seawolves moved a little bit closer to their first ever CCAA regular season championship. Second place Cal State Monterey Bay split with UC San Diego on Saturday, giving Sonoma a two-game lead over the Otters with four games left in the regular season.
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader was a classic pitcher's duel with Sonoma's
Julianne Martinez squaring off against the Gators' Vanessa Truan. The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when the Seawolves broke through.
Following a leadoff single by
Simone Brandalise, Vanyi smashed a two-out, two-run home run to left field. It was the eighth home run of the year for the Rocklin native, putting her one behind teammate
Ali Palermo on both the team's leader board and the school's all-time single-season leader board.
Two runs would be plenty of offense for Martinez (17-6), as she shut down the Gators on six hits for her fifth shutout of the season.

For the second time in the series, seven innings would not be enough to decide Saturday's finale.
Leading 2-1, thanks to single runs in the third and fourth inning, the Seawolves fell behind when the Gators plated two in the fifth, in part due to a Sonoma error.
Their deficit would not last long as Vanyi struck again, doubling to lead off the sixth, then coming around to score on a dropped fly ball.
In the eighth inning, tied at three, the Sonoma State offense took care of the game's outcome with a five-run inning . Following a walk and two singles, Sonoma's
Skylynn Myers doubled to left to drive in two. Brandalise put the icing on the cake a couple of batters later when she doubled with the bases loaded to make the score 8-3.
Samantha Lipperd went the distance for the Seawolves in the circle, surrendering five hits and striking out six to improve to 19-5 on the season.
Game Two Box: No. 21 Sonoma State 8, San Francisco State 3
The Seawolves will close out their regular season, while trying to capture an outright CCAA title, next weekend when they host their neighbors from the north, Humboldt State. The series starts with a pair of games on Friday afternoon.
