SSU Baseball Eliminated From Playoff Contention

TURLOCK, Calif- Randy Wells gave Sonoma State a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a solo shot to center field, but a three-run home run by Cal State Stanislaus' Douglas Porras helped the Warriors grab a 9-6 victory in game one before shutting down the Seawolves in game two for a 5-0 victory to salvage the four-game series split on Sunday afternoon in Turlock. With the pair of losses, Sonoma State was eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in four years. They dropped to 20-24 overall and 13-19 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 19-22 and 15-17.

Sonoma State drew first blood in the top half of the third inning when Ian Cook and Cameron Cook scored on an error by Cal State Stanislaus second baseman Alex Zanini, Jr. The Seawolves then added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Cook.

The lead would be shortlived, however, as the Warriors exploded for five runs in their half of the fourth to take the 5-3 lead.

Joey Parigi then smashed a solo shot to center field and Max Shupe brought home Erik Hansen on a sacrifice fly to knot the game at five. An inning later, Wells grabbed the 6-5 lead with a solo shot of his own.

That's when Porras gave put the Warriors on top with the three-run home run to right center. Cal State Stanislaus then added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI single by Vince Hungerford.

Leonard Giammanco, who relieved Warrior starter Andrew Stueve in the sixth, shutout the Seawolves in the final three innings to help Cal State Stanislaus to the 9-6 win in Sunday's opener.

Thomas Lee got the loss after giving up seven runs through five and a third innings. Casey Slate came in to the game in the sixth and finished the game, giving up three hits and two runs, including the home run to Porras.

Wells led the Seawolf offense with two hits, a RBI and a run scored.

Cal State Stanislaus 5, Sonoma State 0

In the series finale, senior Eric Cendejas pitched a three-hit complete game shutout as Cal State Stanislaus salvaged the four-game series split with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.

Tyler Hess got the loss after giving up two RBI doubles in the second inning and a three run home run off the bat of Michael Johnson in the third, accounting for all of the runs scored in the game.

Ryan Stevens, Jones and Austin Hogans had a hit for Sonoma State in the loss.

Sonoma State will hit the road for a four-game series at Cal State L.A. before returning home to close out the 2010 season with a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona.
