ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A suicide squeeze bunt by
Rochelle Vanyi with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one scored
Danielle Lowe from third to give the Seawolves a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting Humboldt State in the opener. Then, down 2-0 going into the final at bat, Sonoma State clawed its way back to score a run, but the Seawolves left the bases loaded as Humboldt State salvaged the split with 2-1 win in game two. The Seawolves move to 38-13 overall and 24-10 in the CCAA.
With the split by Sonoma State and two victories by Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, the Seawolves remain one game up on the Otters in the conference standings with two games to play. Should Sonoma State sweep Saturday's doubleheader, the Seawolves will become the first women's team to win a CCAA regular season title in school history.
#14 Sonoma State 3, Humboldt State 2
Humboldt State, who came into this weekend's series winning 16 of its last 19 games, didn't waste much time putting a run up on the scoreboard. After getting two quick outs, Sonoma State starting pitcher
Samantha Lipperd allowed a couple of hits and a walk to load the bags full of Lumberjacks. Anna Feick then reached on a fielding error by Vanyi, scoring a run before Lipperd struckout Giavanna Hampton to end the threat.
The Lumberjacks added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Sammi Gilbert to give HSU the 2-0 lead. Lipperd settled down after that, not allowing a hit in the final three and one-thirds innings.
Meanwhile, Sonoma State tied the ballgame up at two with a couple of runs in the fifth. After loading the bases, Lumberjack pitcher Gracie Perez, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, was called for an illegal pitch, scoring
Skylynn Myers to cut the Humboldt State lead in half.
Simone Brandalise came up big with a RBI bloop single, just over the head of third baseman Lindsay Warren to knot the score at two. Perez got herself out of the jam, though, forcing
Ali Palermo to pop up to end the inning.
In the seventh, Myers led the inning off with a single through the left side. Lowe came in to pinch run and advanced to third on a double by
Janelle Arnold two batters later. Two batters later with two outs, Vanyi laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that got back to Perez, but Lowe slid under the tag attempt by Lumberjack catcher Feick for the game winning run.
Lipperd earned the hard fought victory, improving to 20-5 this season after giving up the two runs (one earned), two walks while striking out four. Myers went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored for the Seawolves who managed just four hits in the game.
Five different Humboldt State players got a hit in the opener while Perez (14-9) got tagged with the loss after giving up the three runs and three walks with four strikeouts.
Humboldt State 2, #14 Sonoma State 1
In the nightcap, it became a stalemate between both starting pitchers -- Humboldt State's Vaneza Hoover and Sonoma State's
Julianne Martinez. However, the Lumberjacks broke through in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Warren and a RBI single by Nikki Ketteringham to put HSU up 2-0.
Hoover continued to dominate the Seawolf offense, giving up just five hits through six scoreless innings of work. However, she ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs before Myers fouled out to end the inning.
In the Sonoma State seventh,
Vanessa Currie reached base and advanced to second on a dropped fly ball by right fielder Hampton, giving the Seawolves life with no outs and down 2-0.
Kayla Ledford then walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hoover that also moved Currie over to third. Vanyi then came up big with a one-out bloop single in behind the pitcher's circle that scored Currie. Palermo loaded the bases after being hit by the pitch.
With one out and the bases loaded, Hoover regained composure and forced the Seawolves to fly out and strikeout to end the game and Sonoma State's chances at clinching at least a tie for the conference's regular season title.
Martinez (17-7) got the loss after allowing seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four. Her counterpart, Hoover (13-10), surrendered six SSU hits and the one unearned run, while walking three and striking out seven.
Vanyi had two hits with the lone RBI for the Seawolves.
Sonoma State and Humboldt State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a pair of games starting at approximately 12:05 p.m. Five seniors -- Arnold,
Ashley Britton, Brandalise,
Carli Feuerbach and
Nikki Jaime -- will be honored in a pre-game ceremony, as they will be playing in their final regular season home games.
