BAKERSFIELD, Calif- Neither Sonoma State or Cal State East Bay lead by more than two goals, but the Pioneers pulled ahead late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Seawolves 13-10 on day two of the Wester Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship Tournament. With the loss, Sonoma State falls to 8-27 on the season and will play for seventh place on Sunday against WWPA-rival Cal State San Bernardino at 10:30 a.m.
Just 3:29 into the match, Sonoma State scored four goals and led 4-2. However, the Pioneers pulled even with the Seawolves at the end of the quarter, 5-5.
From then on, both teams traded scores, but Cal State East Bay held an 10-9 lead after three periods of play. At the start of the fourth quarter, Sonoma State ran into foul trouble and surrendered two goals and grabbed a 12-9 advantage.
The Seawolves got another goal by
Holly Armijo with 1:42 left, but it would be as close as they would get as the Pioneers pulled away for the 13-10 win.
Emily Pearce and
Brooke Smith had three goals for Sonoma State as four others scored one goal, including Armijo's in the fourth quarter. Goalkeeper
Gina Uliana made five saves in the cage.
Sonoma State will face Cal State San Bernardino on the final day of the WWPA Championship Tournament on Sunday for seventh place.
