After falling in the first round on Friday, the Seawolves won four straight despite facing elimination. SSU improves to a program-best 42-16.

Sonoma State will await word on its 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Championship plans when the teams are announced on Monday, May 10 at 10 a.m. Stay tuned to sonomaseawolves.com for the most up-to-date information.

Sonoma State 6, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4 (8 innings)

Facing elimination for the third consecutive game, Sonoma State got off to a fast start when Simone Brandalise led off the game with a single. Rochelle Vanyi then reached on an error by the third before Ashley Britton smashed a three-run shot over the left center field fence for the early 3-0 just three batters into the game.

The Seawolves added a run in the second when Ali Palermo sent a ball to the wall in deep left center field, scoring Vanyi to go ahead 4-0.

Cal State Dominguez Hills wouldn't go away quietly, though, putting up four runs in the fourth to knot the game at 4-4 on four consecutive singles and a bases-clearing double by Krista Gould. Martinez got out of the inning, though, after a groundout and strikeout.

Both teams remained scoreless for the next three innings, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Britton led off the inning with a walk before Ali Palermo powered her 10th home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Seawolves ahead 6-4.

Martinez shut down the Toros in the bottom half of the inning, forcing the ultimate championship game by completing the 6-4 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. She gave up six hits while walking three and striking out three.

Britton's home run in the first inning tied CCAA Championship Tournament record -- she hit three this weekend. She also set new highs in RBIs with eight and total bases with 16. Brandalise, Palermo and Skylynn Myers had two hits to pace the Seawolves in the victory. Palermo matched Britton with three RBI.

Sonoma State 3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1

In the final game of the CCAA tournament, both teams remained scoreless through three complete innings of play, but it was Sonoma State to break the ice when Myers led off the inning with a double. She then scored on a RBI single by LeeAnn Stroud.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got the run back in their next at bat when the CCAA Most Valuable Player Emiley McEwen smashed a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth, it was deja vu all over again with a Myers double to leadoff the inning and was brought home by Stroud with another RBI single. The Seawolves held a 2-1 lead. Then, with runners on second and third, Kayla Ledford flew out to right field, but it was deep enough to score Stroud for the 3-1 advantage.

Martinez, who tossed every pitch for the Seawolves on Sunday, shut down the Toro offense in the seventh, despite a one out double. Katie Garcia grounded out to Vanyi at short stop to end the game and send Sonoma State into a frenzied celebration on the field.

Martinez went 3-0 this weekend and also recorded a save. She earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player to go along with All-Tournament Team honors. With the two victories on Sunday, she improved to 20-8 overall this season after giving up six hits, including the home run by McEwen, the Toros' only run of the game. She struck out five.

Brandalise, Vanyi, Myers Stroud and Martinez each had two hits for the Seawolves. Ledford accounted for the other hit.

A total of seven Seawolves were named to the All-Tournament team -- Julianne Martinez, Skylynn Myers, Ashley Britton, Rochelle Vanyi, Simone Brandalise, Ali Palermo and Samantha Lipperd. Martinez, as mentioned above, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Sonoma State will await word on its postseason plans as the Seawolves clinched a berth into the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Championships. The tournament field will be announced on May 10 at 10 a.m.
