BOX SCORE: #25 Sonoma State 3, Dominican (CA) 2
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men's soccer team peppered the Dominican University of California goalkeeper Matt Carlson all evening, as the Seawolves held a large advantage in shots, 22-6, but SSU escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory on Tuesday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Sonoma State remains undefeated at 2-0-0 heading into California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday when they play host to Cal Poly Pomona at 1:30 p.m. The Penguins fell to 0-2-1 this season.
After he was tackled in the goal box, senior
Ryan Hall put the Seawolves on the scoreboard at 9:54 with a converted penalty kick -- Hall's second goal and penalty kick of the season.
Trevor Hurst, who scored two goals on Saturday at Fresno Pacific, found the net on a free kick from 25 yards out that deflected off a Dominican defender, putting SSU up 2-0 at 34:02.
Just over three minutes later, the Penguins' Pedro Guevara took on four SSU defenders and rifled a shot off the near post before it ricochet over to the far post when it finally crossed the goal line.
"(Dominican) works very hard," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "They are very organized defensively. We had a couple of turnovers when we led 2-0 and we kind of let them back in the game."
The Seawolves led by just one goal at 2-1 after the opening half despite an onslaught of shots in favor of SSU -- 12-2. However,
David Holleran gave Sonoma State some breathing room with a header past Dominican's netminder Carlson, after a nice cross on a free kick by
Cam Vickers at 57:28.
Dominican wouldn't go away quietly, though, as Guevara scored his second goal of the match on a free kick that angled around the Seawolves' defensive wall and into the top right corner at 62:28.
The match went back and forth until the final buzzer, but Sonoma State outlasted Dominican with the 3-2 final score.
"(Dominican) is a good team," Ziemer added. "They are much improved and they work very hard. It was a competitive match. They have a lot of guys from Santa Rosa and Sonoma County and we knew it was going to be a fight."
Juan Sosa made two saves between the posts for the Seawolves as his counterpart, Carlson made four saves of the 22 shots he faces, seven of which came on goal. Twelve Seawolves attempted a shot on Tuesday, including a game-high four kicks from freshman
Taylor Varnadore.
Sonoma State will begin its quest for the CCAA title on Friday when the Seawolves host Cal Poly Pomona at 1:30 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
