Box Score: #5 Cal State Dominguez Hills 84, Sonoma State 72

Ben Washington scored a season-high 19 points, including three three-pointers, but Sonoma State surrendered a 19-4 run to fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills to open the second half, as the Toros defeated the Seawolves 84-72 on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson. SSU stumbles to 5-10 overall and 3-8 in CCAA play. CSUDH rises to its best ever start to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the conference.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 5 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, sprinted out to a ten-point 21-11 lead in the opening ten minutes of the contest. However, Sonoma State began chipping away at the lead and pulled to within one point at 32-31. The Toros' Tim McLaurin hit a three-pointer with 1:22 left in the half and CSUDH took a narrow 35-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was a tale of two halves, though, as Cal State Dominguez Hills, who is tied with Humboldt State atop the CCAA standings, jumped out to a big 19-point advantage (54-35) following a 19-4 run in the opening seven minutes of the second half.
When it looked as if the Toros would begin running away, the Seawolves held strong and kept the hosts close, even coming within nine points at 75-66 with just over three minutes left in regulation. That was when Marcquintice Davis took over for CSUDH, scoring eight of the game's last 14 points in the final two minutes to give the Toros the 84-72 win.
Five Cal State Dominguez Hills players scored in double figures, led by the 16 points of Davis and Zareh Zargaryan. James Cawthorne nearly came away with a double-double, finishing just one rebound shy at 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. It was on the boards that Sonoma State was outmatched -- CSUDH outrebounded SSU 40-20 in the game. The hosts also hit 50 percent of their shots (26-52) and hit 6 of 15 shots from deep.
The Seawolves were led by the 19 of Washington and 11 points from
Sterling Arterberry. Sonoma State hit on 21 of 49 shots from the floor (42.9 percent), including 12 of 28 from beyond the arc. SSU had its best output from the free throw line this season, converting 90 percent from the stripe (18-20).
Sonoma State will look to rebound on Saturday night when it travels over to Cal State L.A. to take on the Golden Eagles at the Eagles Nest. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
