ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The nets were on fire and it was Sonoma State torching them. The Seawolves, led by the five three-pointers of
Patrick Scott, made a season-high 15 three-pointers on 15 of 22 shooting from beyond the arc, blasting the defending national champions Cal Poly Pomona Broncos, 82-60, on Thursday evening at The Wolves' Den. It was all Seawolves from start to finish. The Broncos remained close for the first seven minutes of the ball game, trailing by just two points at 10-8. However, Sonoma State nailed a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions to grab and eight-point advantage. Another three-ball by
Mike Nelson extended the Seawolf lead to double-digits several minutes later and Sonoma State would begin running away.
With a 38-21 lead at halftime, SSU shot 11 of 20 from the floor, including 6 of 9 from downtown. It was the second half when the Seawolves really put on the show. Nine of SSU's 15 made three-pointers came in the second half and 15 of SSU's 25 made shots in the contest came from three land.
The Sonoma State lead would get as big as 29 with 7:07 remaining in the contest when Scott drained a three-pointer, putting the Seawolves up 69-40. Cal Poly Pomona started chipping away at the lead and came within 18 points on two occasions, but it was too much to overcome.
Scott matched his career-high with 20 points on the night, hitting 6 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 7 from three-point range.
Will Olsem would be flawless from deep, hitting all four three pointers he attempted on the night.
James Sandoval and
Ben Washington would also score in double-figures as the Seawolves margin of victory match the largest against Cal Poly Pomona in program history.
The Seawolves hit 61 percent from the floor on 25 of 41 shooting and missed just seven three pointers (15 of 22; 68.2 percent). The Broncos held the advantage on the glass, though, bringing down 28 to the Seawolves' 23.
Cal Poly Pomona had three players in double figures, led by the 14 points of Dwayne Fells and Mark Rutledge. Rutledge also lived downtown for much of the game, hitting 4 of 8 three pointers. Mitchel Anderson chipped in with 12 points on the Broncos' losing effort.
