James Sandoval led all scorers on Friday night with 18 points.
Box Score: Cal State San Bernardino 61, Sonoma State 47

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- James Sandoval led all scorers with 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting, but the rest of the Sonoma State men's basketball team went cold from the field, shooting just 34.6 percent in a 61-47 loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino. The Seawolves (8-13, 6-11 CCAA) have lost three of their last four while the Coyotes improve to 12-8 and 10-6 in conference play.

Mike Nelson got the scoring going for the Seawolves on Friday with a three-pointer to give SSU the early 3-0 lead. The Coyotes Corey Caston would match Nelson's three-ball just 12 seconds later, but Sonoma State wouldn't let the hosts take the lead for the majority of the opening half. The Seawolves only led by as much as four points during that time, but the Coyotes finally took the lead at the 9:39 mark with a layup by Nate Roth for the 16-14 lead.

The first half eventually saw seven tie scores, but when Cal State San Bernardino took the lead at the 9:39 mark, Sonoma State wouldn't regain the lead the rest of the way.

In the final 20 minutes, the Coyotes would lead by eight (33-25) with 17:38 remaining in the game, but the Seawolves wouldn't let the hosts run away...just yet. A layup by Sandoval at the 9:33 mark would close the gap to just one at 38-37, but CSUSB would go on a 11-2 run to extend the Coyote lead to ten points at 49-39 with five minutes left. That run would then grow to 23-7 in a nine-minute span, as Cal State San Bernardino ran away with the 61-47 win late.

Sandoval was the only SSU player scoring in double-figures as the team, who came into the game as the CCAA's third-highest scoring team, scored under 50 points for the first time since a 41-point output on Feb. 20, 2009 at Cal Poly Pomona. Sonoma State, the conference's best shooting team, was also held to just 34.6 percent from the floor on 18 of 52 shooting. Cal State San Bernardino converted 26 of 56 shots (46.4 percent).

Caston (14) and Theron Laudermill (11) scored in double-figures for the Coyotes, as both Laudermill and David Jefferson brought down a game-high nine rebounds. CSUSB outrebounded SSU, 41-27.

Sonoma State will turn its sights to the defending national champions in Cal Poly Pomona, who lost to Humboldt State on Friday, 64-60. It was the Broncos' second loss in their last nine games. Tipoff from Kellogg Gym on Saturday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
