Sonoma State 8, Cal State Bakersfield 7 (ot)
The Seawolves and Roadrunners played one of the closest matches in the tournament this weekend and neither team led by more than two goals at any point. However, it was Division I Cal State Bakersfield that held the slight edge at halftime, 4-2.
Sonoma State began to make its move, though, and pulled to within one goal at 5-4 with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Then, with the CSUB leading by a goal and time running down, Lowy fired a shot that skipped past Pezzolla and into the net for the game-tying score, sending the match into overtime.
In the overtime period, both teams traded a goal, but it was the goal by Stansfield in sudden death that led Sonoma State to the thrilling 8-7 win. Lowy and Stansfield both had two goals while
Laura Kunz,
Kyleigh Shea,
Lindsay Rangel and
Monica Tasier all had one goal.
Taylor Basso had a huge game in the cage, making 10 saves.
It was the first win over Cal State Bakersfield in head coach
Coralie Simmons' four-year tenure at Sonoma State, snapping an eight-match losing streak to the Roadrunners, dating back to 2006.
#7 San Jose State 14, Sonoma State 2
The Spartans jumped all over the Seawolves in the first half, sprinting out to a 8-0 lead at halftime. Five more goals by San Jose State in the third period put them up 13-1, then finished the match off with another goal in the fourth to win 14-2.
Lowy and
Bridgette Souza each scored a goal in the game while Basso made three saves.
Sonoma State won both conference games this weekend, improving to 3-9 this season in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). It was a tune-up for the WWPA Championships coming up on Apr. 29-May 1 at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. Two more matches -- at Pacific and an exhibition match against Olympic Club -- on Apr. 23.
