Box Score: Chico State 22, No. 27 Sonoma State 9
STOCKTON, Calif- Chico State scored early and often on Thursday evening, rolling to a 22-9 win over No. 27 Sonoma State in a CCAA Championship Tournament opening round game at Klein Family Field in Stockton. The loss sends the Seawolves into the loser's bracket, where they will take on Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow at 11:00.
The Wildcats jumped on Sonoma starter
Kenny Arnerich for four runs in the first inning on four hits, including a pair of doubles. The Seawolves would get two back in the first, but another three-spot in the second staked Chico to a 7-2 lead.
The game was busted open in the fourth when Chico plated four, three of them on a home run by leadoff man Jackson Evans.
Though a
Steven Filippi grand slam in the bottom of the fourth would bring the Seawolves to within seven at 13-6, the Wildcats poured on five more in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Sonoma State pounded out 15 hits, including four from
Randy Wells, but the story of the game was the Chico offense. The Wildcats, who managed just nine runs combined in last weekend's four-game series against the Seawolves, had 22 hits and 22 runs.
It was the most runs given up by a Sonoma State team since 1997.
Matt Anderson led the charge for Chico with four hits and four RBIs. Evans was 3-for-6 with four RBIs, Cody Foster was 3-for-6 with two doubles, and Ian McKay was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Kyle Jones and
Garrett Schwartz, in addition to Filippi.
The Seawolves will try to stay alive tomorrow at 11:00 when they face Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos were a 9-6 loser to UC San Diego on Thursday afternoon. The winner of that game will play the loser of tomorrow's winner's bracket game between Chico State and UC San Diego.
