KANEOHE, Hawai'i- Brittanie Verissimo went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, accounting for three of the five Sonoma State hits, but Cal State San Bernardino scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Seawolves, 2-0, in Sunday's NCAA Division II West Sub-Regional Championship game at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe, Hawai'i. SSU sees its season come to an end, finishing 2011 with a 38-22 record. The Coyotes (35-22) advance to the Super Regional next weekend.

The Seawolves got off to a fast start on two consecutive singles by Danielle D'Eccliss and Verissimo to lead off the game. D'Eccliss and Verissimo stole third and second base, respectively, and runners were in scoring position with no outs. However, Cal State San Bernardino's Cassidy Lee pitched herself out of the jam, inducing a couple of fly outs and a strikeout to end the threat.

It was the last time Sonoma State advanced a runner beyond second base; the only other time a Seawolf reached second base was on a double by Kayla Ledford with one out in the second inning. After the Ledford double, only Verissimo reached base via two more singles in the third inning and in the sixth inning.

After five and a half innings of scoreless softball, it was the Coyotes who finally broke through with a pair of runs, both with two outs. Jacquelyn Holtzclaw doubled down the left field line and later came home on a single by Jamie Leffingwell. Leffingwell the came around to score when Stef Pace singled to center, putting Cal State San Bernardino ahead, 2-0.

Facing elimination, Sonoma State couldn't get anything going offensively in the seventh, as the Coyotes Lee struckout two Seawolves and forced a ground out to end the game.

SSU starter Julianne Martinez, despite giving up the two runs in the sixth, dominated in the circle, allowing five hits, three of which came in the fateful inning. She walked one and struckout three, but fell to 8-8 on the season.

Lee (17-8) earned all three victories in the circle for Cal State San Bernardino this weekend. She allowed the five hits and struckout four in her complete game effort.
