Keala Peterson had a match-high 14 kills and
Regan Richert hit at a blistering .769 clip with 10 kills in 13 attacks and no errors as the Sonoma State volleyball team rolled to a three-set sweep of visiting Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves collected two victories this weekend to open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, moving to 4-2 overall (2-0 CCAA). The Warriors (4-1, 1-1 CCAA) suffered their first loss of the season.
After a relatively slow start in the first set, Sonoma State took off in the second set, hitting at an unbeliveable .600 clip. Everything seemed to go down, as the Seawolves slammed 16 kills with just one error in 25 swings.
Hayley Ross spread the wealth between six different teammates, all of which had at least two kills.
Richert, who had five kills in the second frame, matched that performance with five more in the third set. Between her and Peterson, who recorded three kills in the final set, they combined for eight of the team's 11 kills down the stretch.
Ally Sather put the punctuation mark on the match with a match-point kill and the Seawolves finished the convincing 25-16, 25-11, 25-13 victory.
Ross handed out 33 assists to lead all players and
Lindsay Lytle had ten digs and three service aces. Defensively, Sonoma State held Cal State Stanislaus to a .054 hitting percentage, including a -.032 mark in the third set -- SSU hit .398 as a team. The Seawolves had more kills (43-25), more assists (43-22), more aces (5-4), more digs (45-37) and more blocks (7-5) in the lopsided victory.
For Cal State Stanislaus, Jennifer Marsh had a team-high six kills and Lianne Vicchio added five. Madison Moss recorded a match-high 12 digs.
Sonoma State will return to the court on Wednesday for a mid-week showdown with northern California rival Humboldt State. First serve from The Wolves' Den is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Seawolves will then hit the road for a brief two-match road trip to Cal State Monterey Bay (Sept. 16) and Cal State East Bay (Sept. 17) next weekend before returning back home for a season-long five-match homestand.
