Taylor Krenwinkel recorded nine digs to lead all players, braking the program's record for most digs in a career, while
Regan Richert and
Ally Sather hammered 11 kills apiece, helping the Sonoma State women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-18, 25-13) over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves have won seven straight games and remain undefeated in CCAA play at 6-0 (9-2 overall). The Toros fall to 1-8 (0-5 CCAA).
Krenwinkel, a senior from San Diego, needed just four digs in Friday's match to top the old record of 1,704, held by former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton (2004-07). With nine digs against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Krenwinkel now has 1,710 career digs in 360 sets played.
The Seawolves got off to a quick start in the opening set, jumping to an 8-1 lead, forcing a Toro timeout. Sonoma State remained in command for the remainder of the set, crusing to a 25-15 win and a match lead at one set to none.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out fighting in the second frame, eventually forcing a 16-16 tie. It would be the last time CSUDH was able to keep up with SSU, as the Seawolves seven straight points and nine of the final 11 points to win set number two, 25-18.
In the third set, the Toros managed to tally the first two points, but the Seawolves came back on a 14-4 run to lead 14-6. From there, it would be all Sonoma State as the hosts earned its seventh straight victory with the clinching 25-13 win in the third and final frame.
Richert sported a .500 hitting percentage on the night, killing 11 of her 18 attacks on the night, erring just twice. Sather followed up with a 11-kill performance, making four errors in 22 swings (.318). As a team, Sonoma State hit at a fiery .314 -- the fourth time this season that SSU has hit above .300.
Brooke Moore contibuted eight kills in 12 attempts while not making an error (.667).
Hayley Ross handed out 35 assists and Richert and Krenwinkel each served three aces.
Defensively, the Seawolves held the Toros to a .102 clip, surrendering a team-high eight kills by Azieanna Smith. Krenwinkel was again the leader on the backline, defending nine attacks, and Richert had a huge game at the net, rejecting four Cal State Dominguez Hills attacks.
Sonoma State will welcome Cal State L.A. (5-5, 2-3 CCAA) to The Wolves' Den on Saturday night. The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 3-1 win over Humboldt State on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
