BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Visiting Notre Dame de Namur netted four goals by four different players in the opening 33 minutes and held the Sonoma State offense scoreless the entire match, as the Argonauts pulled off a shocking 4-0 upset of the nationally-ranked Seawolves on Tuesday evening at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Both teams move to 1-1-0 this season.
"This was a very disappointing loss for us," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "Notre Dame de Namur is a good team. We gave them too much time with the ball and we weren't sharp on defense."
The Argonauts' Armanda Garcia put his team up 1-0 at the 17:34 mark before his teammate, Christian Rosales, scored just 57 seconds later to give Notre Dame de Namur a two-goal cushion. At 30:11, Cristobal Montes joined NDNU's offensive attack and found the net, putting the visitors up by a large 3-0 margin. Just over two minutes later at 32:34, Arturo Gomez seemingly put the match out of reach with the Argonauts fourth goal of the match.
It was a lopsided box score at halftime, as Sonoma State was outshot 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, the Seawolves and Argonauts had five shots apiece, but the scoreboard stayed the same and SSU suffered its first loss of the 2011 regular season. All-in-all, NDNU led in shots (15-7) and corner kicks (5-4).
Andrew Ball made one save between posts while his counterpart, the Argonauts' Jay Tsurouka, made two saves in his shutout victory.
Sonoma State, which is ranked 20th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll, will jump into California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Seawolves will travel to Chico to battle with 14th-ranked Chico State in a rematch of last season's NCAA opening-round match. SSU will then host its CCAA home opener on Sunday when it welcomes Humboldt State to Rohnert Park at 2:00 p.m.
