Water Polo Rallies For Season-Opening Win In OT Over Sunbirds

Adrienne Bisharat led all scorers with four goals in her Sonoma State debut on Sunday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Down 8-5 going into the fourth quarter against Fresno Pacific, the Sonoma State women's water polo team rallied for three unanswered goals, including Adrienne Bisharat's equalizer with just four seconds left in regulation.  Then, in the first overtime, Alexa May fired a shot into the back of the cage to put the Seawolves up one.  This goal would be the difference maker as Sonoma State held on to win their first match of the season over the Sunbirds, 9-8.

It was a back and forth match between the Seawolves and Sunbirds on a brisk morning in Rohnert Park.  Sonoma would draw first blood scoring just two minutes into the game.  However, the Sunbirds wouldn't be silenced, as they would score two in the first quarter to put the match at 2-1 after one period.  Both teams scored two goals in the second quarter to leave Sonoma down 4-3 at halftime.

Fresno Pacific came out hot in the third netting four goals, three of which came in a 1:16 span, while the Seawolves could only put two on the board.  The fourth quarter was a different story for both teams.  The Seawolves recorded three goals in the quarter, starting with a penalty shot taken by Bisharat that saw the back of cage at the 6:39 mark.  The Seawolves would notch two more goals in the quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime where they would have the upper hand.  Sonoma held Fresno Pacific scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Bisharat had the hot hand for the Seawolves, scoring four of their nine goals, including the penalty shot to start off the fourth quarter comeback.  Natalie Del Carlo, Bridgette Souza, Lindsay Rangel, and Lexii Morabito all pitched in with one goal apiece.  May's lone goal came in overtime and proved to be the winning shot for the Seawolves.

Not only did the offense come up big for SSU down the stretch, but goalie Ariel Lockshaw played an outstanding match, making 17 saves in her first victory as a Seawolf.

Fresno Pacific's Jaimie Lugo had a hat trick for the Sunbirds, tallying three goals, while Nicolette Haley made two scores.  Krista Loper, Jennifer Cobb, and Katlin Hicks threw in one goal each.

In Sonoma State's scrimmage on Sunday afternoon against the Olympic Club, the Seawolves trailed by just three goals at halftime, 6-3, but OC would score five unanswered goals in the third period to help defeat SSU, 14-6.  Souza and Anna O'Connell would record two goals each to lead the Seawolves.

Sonoma State will return to regular season action when they travel to Santa Barbara on Jan. 28-29 to take on UC Santa Barbara, Concordia, UC Irvine and Santa Clara in the two-day UC Santa Barbara Tournament.
