Front Line Leads Seawolves To Victory Over CSU Monterey Bay

BOX SCORE Sonoma State def. Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17) -- Box Score

SEASIDE, Calif. --  Front row hitters Caylie Seitz, Ally Sather and Kelsey Hull each slammed 15 kills to help lead the Sonoma State women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Seawolves have won their fourth match in a row, going back to last weekend.  Sonoma State improves to 15-8, 9-4 in the CCAA, while the Otters fall to 10-11, 4-9 in conference play.

Game one started off with back-and forth scoring, involving four ties.  Tied at six-all, Sonoma State was awarded the next four out of five points to take a 10-7 lead in the early going.  The Otters remained close, however, eventually coming back to take a 14-13 lead on a kill by Victoria Clardy.  CSU Monterey Bay remained in the lead until Devin Shaver served an ace to tie it at 23-23.  Unfortunately for the Seawolves, kills by Clardy and Julia Ashen sealed the game one victory for the Otters, 25-23.

Unhappy after the game one loss, SSU came out with a vengence in game two, starting the game off with a 6-0 run, including kills from Brooke Moore and Sather.  The Seawolves took advantage of the Otters worst hitting game of the night, grabbing the 25-18 win and tying the match at one game apiece.

Fighting through 13 ties and six lead changes, Sonoma State was able to grab game three to take a 2-1 match lead.  With the score at 6-6, the Seawolves were able to score four in a row, forcing CSUMB head coach Jody Garry to call a timeout, down 6-10.  After the timeout, the Otters staged a valiant comeback scoring five points in a row, to put the score at 10-11.  As the teams began to go back-and forth, once again, Seitz was able to put a dent in the CSUMB hardwood, smashing four consecutive kills for SSU, giving the Seawolves a 19-18 lead.  With the Seawolves down 21-22, Sonoma State finished it off with four straight points, three coming from the hand of Madelyn Densberger, to take game three 25-22.

Outhitting the Otters (.410-.292), Sonoma State connected on 20 out of 39 balls to wisk Cal State Monterey Bay away with the 25-17 game four win.  Regan Richert and Hull had the hot hands in game four, firing five kills each.  Seitz and Sather slammed four kills and the feet of the Otters, as well.  The eight-point win was the largest lead for either team in the match.

Richert finished the game with 11 kills alongside Densberger's eight.  The aforementioned trio of Seitz, Sather and Hull collected 15 kills.  For CSU Monterey Bay, Ashen nailed 15 kills.  Jessica Malcolm and Clardy were the other Otters with double-digit kills with 13 and 11, respectively.  Also pitching in for the Otters, Janai Johnson threw down five kills, Lacee Ventura had two and Lily Straight contributed one kill.

Sonoma State setter, Hayley Ross, dished out 33 assists, while Shaver gave out 25.  CSUMB's Kelsey Johnston handed out 43 assists.  Libero Nicole Gragnola handled the ball well, with 18 digs.  The Otters Rachel Cooks led the dig category with 23.

The Seawolves are now tied for third place with San Francisco State after the Gators were upset by Cal State East Bay on Saturday.  Sonoma State will return home for two rivalry games against Cal State Stanisalus on Friday (Oct. 26), followed by Chico State on Saturday (Oct. 27).  Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
