BOX SCORE #5 Sonoma State 1, Cal State L.A. 0 (2OT) -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- JJ McFarlin headed in a perfect cross from
Bree Robles in the 103rd minute to break up a scoreless tie, helping the fifth-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team to an exciting 1-0 victory over host Cal State L.A. on Sunday and a berth into the 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time since 2008.
The Seawolves, who came into the weekend as the top-ranked team in the first official NCAA Division II west region poll, rebounded from a Friday night upset loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills to improve to 13-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in the CCAA, still maintaining a one-point lead over Cal State Stanislaus for the top spot in the North Division standings with one conference match remaining.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout regulation and both overtime periods, but Sonoma State would enjoy a 16-13 advantage in shots, although the majority of shots from both teams were from a distance. Quality chances were few and far between in a match between two of the better defensive teams in the conference. SSU goalkeeper
Alexis Sciacqua made five saves while her counterpart, Cal State L.A.'s Gabriella Batmani made seven saves.
After 100 minutes of scoreless action, the Golden Eagles got caught early in the second overtime after a collision deep in the Cal State L.A. end of the field. Play continued and Robles was able to send a cross into the box where McFarlin headed it perfectly just inside the far post and out of the reach of Batmani for the game-winner, sending the Seawolves into another sudden-victory on-field celebration, the second in as many weeks.
The best scoring chances during regulation by either team were not actually prevented by the goalkeepers. Sonoma State's
Ashley Martin got a header off a free kick just go over the crossbar early in the second half and Cal State L.A.'s Andrea Lammers had a header off a cross sail just wide of the post a few minutes later.
Martin and
Elena Catania led the Seawolf attack with three shots apiece, while
Cara Curtin, McFarlin, Robles and
Sara Studer each had two attempts. Sciacqua recorded her conference-leading 10th shutout of the season.
With just two matches left in the regular season, Sonoma State will return home for its final regular season home contest on Friday against Humboldt State at 12:30 p.m. It will, however, play as a non-conference match, but will also serve as Senior Day. Eight Seawolves will be honored in a special pre-match ceremony --
Ashley Martin,
Bree Robles,
Macy Usher,
Elena Catania,
Holly Weaver,
Sara Studer,
Gretel Amman and
Alexis Sciacqua will suit up for their final regular season home contest of their careers on Friday.
