Offense Falls Silent In 3-1 Home Loss To Gators On Halloween

BOX SCORE San Francisco State def. Sonoma State 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22) -- Box Score

ROHNERT PARK --
Caylie Seitz hammered a team-high 15 kills and both Ally Sather and Brooke Moore chipped in with eight, but visiting San Francisco State held the CCAA's best-hitting team to just .189, all while acing 14 serves, en route to a 3-1 win over host Sonoma State on Halloween night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves' six-match win streak comes to a halt, falling back into fourth place in the conference standings at 11-5 (17-7 overall) with six regular season matches left in 2012.  The Gators, who have swept the season series with the Seawolves, take over sole possession of third place at 12-4 (17-6 overall).

With the loss, Sonoma State takes a severe hit to its postseason hopes as the first official NCAA Division II West Regional poll that was released earlier on Wednesday listed SSU at No. 9; the top eight teams in the final regional poll that will be released at the end of the regular season qualify for the NCAA tournament.  San Francisco State came into Wednesday's match at No. 6 in the region.  A complete list of the West Region rankings released Wednesday can be found by clicking here.

Sonoma State got off to a quick start early on, jumping to a 15-9 lead in the opening set, but San Francisco State would chip away at the lead and eventually knot the frame at 23-23.  However a kill by Madelyn Densberger and an SFSU attack error sealed the first-set victory at 25-23 and the Seawolves would take the 1-0 lead.

The second set would prove to be the closest of the night, as the two teams would battle through eight ties and three lead changes, but the final lead change would come during a 4-0 run by the Gators midway through the set, breaking a 15-15 tie and eventually forcing a Seawolf time out at 17-15.  Sonoma would come within one point on four different occasions, including a 24-23 score off of a Seitz kill, but Meagan Wright slammed a ball to the floor to knot the match at one set apiece with the 25-23 win.

From then on, the San Francisco State defense began to stifle the hard-hitting Sonoma State offense, holding the hosts to just .037 in the third set and .195 in the fourth.  Meanwhile, the Gators started to heat up offensively, including nine service aces in the final two sets, to cruise to a 25-14 win in the third and a 25-22 match-clinching victory in the fourth.

Wright led the way for San Francisco State with 15 kills, five of which came in the fourth set alone.  She hit at a blazing .419 clip, erring just twice in 31 attacks.  Katie Judd had 11 kills and Jazmine Williams followed with 10.

Seitz was the only Sonoma State player with double-digit kills; she smashed 10 of her 15 in the first two sets.  Sather is now just four kills from breaking the program's 14-year-old record for most in a career; she has 1,426 career kills.  Moore was virtually unstoppable on her attacks, pounding eight of her 11 hits to the floor, not erring once (.727).

Defensively, Densberger led the team with 14 digs, followed by 13 from Kelsey Hull and 12 from Nicole Gragnola.

Sonoma State will look to regroup as it welcomes Cal State L.A. into town on Friday for the second-to-last home match of the season.  First serve from The Wolves' Den is set for 7:00 p.m.
