BOX SCORE Sonoma State def. Humboldt State 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) – Box Score
ARCATA, Calif. – Ally Sather recorded 10 kills and hit .429 while
Nicole Gragnola led all defenders with 17 digs with four services aces, helping the Sonoma State volleyball team to a quick three-set win over host Humboldt State on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.
The Seawolves, who rose three spots to No. 6 in the official NCAA Division II West Region poll this week, improve to 21-8 overall and 15-6 in the CCAA with just one match left in the regular season. Should they remain in the Top 8 of the final west region poll scheduled to be released via a live selection show on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:00 pm, the Seawolves will qualify for their fifth straight NCAA postseason. The Lumberjacks fall to 3-25 and 1-20 in conference action.
While Sonoma State led for much of the match, Humboldt State made things interesting at the end of the third set, pulling into ties at 20-20 and 22-22, but those would prove to be the final ties of the match; an HSU service error, a kill by
Brooke Moore and a Lumberjack attack error secured SSU its 10th win in its last 12 matches.
Sather accounted for more than a quarter of the Seawolves' 39 kills, erring just once in 21 tries.
Madelyn Densberger, who had a match-high .538 hitting percentage, and
Caylie Seitz chipped in with eight kills apiece.
Regan Richert hammered in seven kills with just one error in 12 swings (a .500 clip), as Sonoma hit .265 as a team.
Hayley Ross and
Devin Shaver tallied 15 assists each while Gragnola, Densberger (13 digs) and Richert (3.0 total blocks) led a defense that held Humboldt to a mediocre .125 hitting percentage.
For Humboldt State, Alexa Rosendale slammed a match-high 13 kills to the hardwood as Channel Washington added seven, combining for 20 of the Lumberjacks' 32 kills. Tiffany McCray had 11 digs to lead the HSU backline.
Sonoma State will play its final match of the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Cal Poly Pomona for a 7:00 pm first serve. Then, the Seawolves will await word on their NCAA postseason fate, as the 2012 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament field will be announced on Sunday at 7:00 pm, which will be broadcast live at NCAA.com.
