Seawolves Make Bid For NCAA Appearance With 3-1 Win Over CPP

BOX SCORE Sonoma State def. Cal Poly Pomona 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18) --  Box Score

POMONA, Calif. --
Caylie Seitz smashed a match-high 19 kills and hit .341 and Ally Sather hammered another 14 with just two errors in 30 attacks (.400 hitting percentage) as the Sonoma State women's volleyball blew by host Cal Poly Pomona in four sets on Saturday, the final night of the regular season.

With a 22-8 overall record and ranked No. 6 in the official NCAA Division II West Region poll last week, the Seawolves hope that with wins in their final three matches, including victories in 11 of their final 13 of the regular season, they will qualify for their fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance.  Sonoma will have to wait until Sunday at 7:00 pm to find out, as the 64-team NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament field will be unveiled via a live selection show at NCAA.com.

Sunday's live selection show from the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis can be viewed by clicking here.

The Seawolves also finished at 16-6 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this season, tying with San Francisco State for second place in the conference standings.

As it has done all season long, Sonoma State got off to a blazing start, hitting at a .419 clip in the opening set, led by six kills off the hand of Seitz.  Cal Poly Pomona stayed close, however, never trailing by more than four points.  In fact, the Broncos pulled to within one point at 22-21 on a service ace by Kelly Bonja, but two unforced errors by CPP and a Devin Shaver ace gave SSU the early 1-0 match lead.

At the start of the second set, it was another back and forth battle, but the Broncos would go on a 5-0 run to lead 10-6 and force a Seawolf timeout.  A kill from Seitz ended the run, but Cal Poly Pomona eventually extended its lead to as much as eight points at 22-14 before coming away with the 25-17 win to knot the match at one set apiece.

The third and fourth sets were much of the same, as Sonoma State rode several runs midway through each set to build up momentum that would carry the Seawolves to their third straight match victory with identical scores of 25-18 in the third and fourth sets.

Although SSU's offense cooled off after their first-set explosion, it finished with a .292 clip for the match with 57 kills and 17 errors in 137 total attacks.  Seitz and Sather were the only Seawolves in double-figures, but Regan Richert recorded eight kills in 16 swings without committing an error while Brooke Moore and Kelsey Hull chipped in with six apiece.  Nicole Gragnola had a team-high 13 digs to lead the Sonoma defense that held Pomona to a .225 hitting percentage.

The Broncos had just one player with double-digit kills -- Jessica Doerner with 16.

Sonoma State is looking to make its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and it will find out Sunday at 7:00 p.m. if its season will continue.  Stay tuned to sonomaseawolves.com for updated NCAA coverage Sunday night.
